November 2011

Dear Friend,

We are writing to ask your help to overcome an all-too-common, often hidden, serious yet preventable, problem affecting families in Cumberland and Perry Counties ─ domestic violence.  There is no face to domestic violence, and it knows no boundaries.

During the first six months of 2011 alone, seven people died in Cumberland County as a result of domestic violence - five by homicide, two by suicide.  District Attorney David Freed reports that police departments in Cumberland and Perry Counties charge someone in an incident of domestic violence at least once each day.

Over the past 10 years, more than 1,500 Pennsylvanians have lost their lives to domestic violence.  That’s one death for every two and a half days.

Although domestic violence most frequently occurs behind closed doors, it exacts a terrible toll in loss of life, injuries, property damage, lost work productivity and police and criminal justice costs.  Domestic violence touches every segment of our society.

This is a time in our country and in our own area, where unemployment is taking horrific tolls on families. While the economic downturn does not directly cause domestic violence, it does contribute to its increase in
frequency and severity.  Last year, DVS/CP experienced a 100% increase in days in shelter. Unfortunately, over the past few years, DVS/CP experienced government funding cuts and decreases in private contributions. DVS/CP is one of 61 community based organizations throughout Pennsylvania providing vital services to victims of domestic violence.

Today we are asking you to help us battle domestic violence. We understand these are difficult economic times, but generously contributing helps us provide access to our 24 hour hotline, emergency shelter, counseling and legal advocacy services to individuals and families and public education to the community.

Your support is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
