of Cumberland & Perry Counties

Did You Know?

Myth:
My partner sometimes crosses the line because he cares about me so much. If I could just do everything right, he'd stop the abuse...

Fact:
Violence is a result of power and control, NOT love. 60% of women in abusive relationships say that the physical abuse began while they were dating!! The violence will only get worse with time if it is not stopped.

Volunteer Opportunities

Domestic Violence Services of Cumberland & Perry Counties (DVS/CP) in conjunction with Sexual Assault/Rape Crisis of Cumberland County will be conducting its fall Volunteer Training beginning
September 11, 2007. The training will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30p.m. – 9p.m.

If you are interested please return the Volunteer Application application by July 30th to DVS/CP, P.O. Box 1039, Carlisle, PA 17013.

Volunteer opportunities are available for both individuals and groups. There are five categories of volunteer opportunities.

Direct Service Volunteer Opportunities for Individuals

This type of volunteer work requires an application, interview with the Volunteer Coordinator and our free 40-hour training. Direct service volunteers answer the 24-hour hotline both in our office and at home, and cover after-business hours, weekends, and holidays. They are advocates and speakers for our organization. Others provide childcare during group counseling sessions or engage in weekly activities with the children in shelter. (Please call and ask to speak to our Volunteer Coordinator at (717) 258-4806 for more information)
Support Services Volunteer Opportunities for Individuals and Groups

DVS/CP is fortunate to have volunteers who provide office support, general maintenance and cleaning of the shelter, and assistance with special projects. After receiving the application the Volunteer Coordinator will meet with prospective volunteers to discuss any specific training when it is appropriate. (Please call and ask to speak to our Volunteer Coordinator at (717) 258-4806 for more information)
Community Volunteers Opportunities for Individuals or Groups

As DVS/CP increases community awareness activities we need volunteers to staff our information booth at community events and festivals. Our community outreach efforts include our participation at over 20 events in Cumberland and Perry Counties each year. Volunteers are offered a mini-training if requested before staffing an event. Involvement includes handing out DVS/CP balloons and literature, and selling DVS/CP merchandise. DVS/CP sells license plates, t-shirts, sweat shirts and pins with the DVS/CP logo. This is a fundraising effort to continue our services as well as another avenue to create community awareness for this issue.
DVS/CP Board Membership and Board Committees

Our Volunteer Board is actively involved in fund raising, community campaigns, newsletter ideas, marketing and special projects. The Board is comprised of members of the Cumberland and Perry County Communities who share their time and talents to help put an end to domestic violence. Board membership requires an application and an orientation. Volunteers, who do not need to be official Board Members, are also invited to participate on Board Committees. DVS/CP Board Committees are as follows:
Finance
Legislative
Marketing (Public Relations)
Resource and Development (Fundraising)
Please call our business office at (717) 258-4806 for more information.
On Your Own

Volunteers, as individuals or groups, can collect items from our shelter needs list to be donated to the shelter. (See shelter information for updated needs list)
